Local obituary: Nolan Barr, Mashpee 17-year-old (1)

Nolan Robert Barr, a lifelong resident of Mashpee, died tragically and suddenly on June 25, 2024. He was only 17 years old.

Nolan was born on August 16, 2006, in Plymouth, MA, to proud parents Meghan Elizabeth (Deehan) Barr and Robert Scott Barr. He was the youngest of three boys and from an early age was always wise beyond his years. He was quick-witted and charming and was always full of “one-liners” — although sometimes they were inappropriate, he could always make people laugh! Nolan was a rising senior at Mashpee Middle High School, he was a hard worker, and he proudly made the honor roll during the spring of this year.

Nolan was a talented athlete; he played soccer, football, and basketball throughout his childhood and continued with both football and basketball into his high school years at MMHS. He had a particular love for basketball, his parents recall that he would practice his shooting at his basketball hoop for hours on end. He didn’t just love to play sports, he was also a devoted spectator — in fact he wouldn’t leave the house on Sundays, because football was on! Nolan loved to explore new places, he loved camping and going on vacations with his family. He always kept an open mind during these adventures and is remembered as saying, “There is something to see or do everywhere”.

Nolan was a uniquely compassionate person for someone so young. While most his age had afterschool jobs bussing tables or scooping ice cream, Nolan was a two-year, dedicated employee of Laurentide Assisted Living in Mashpee. He had an uncanny ability to make conversation with people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. He quickly became a favorite for many of the residents at Laurentide and did his job well and with integrity. He is also remembered for the things he did that were not required of him, like attending a community event at Laurentide, even on his day off, because he told someone he would be there.

Nolan is remembered as a kind soul. He was sweet, caring, empathetic, funny, and loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a loving son, a devoted brother, and a dependable friend anyone would be lucky to have. He will be so unbelievably missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Nolan is survived by his loving parents, Meghan Barr and Robert Scott Barr; his brothers, Ethan Barr and Jared Barr; his grandmother, Marjorie Sullivan, and her husband, Robert; his cousins, Jonathan Moran, Meghan Moran, Michael Palmer, Victoria Mueller, and Zachary Fairbanks; his cherished cat, Brooklyn; as well as many aunts, uncles, and so many dear friends. Nolan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Irene Barr, Robert Barr, and Paul Deehan, as well as his cousin David Palmer.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2024, from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 74 Algonquin Ave. (RTE 151), in Mashpee. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at 3:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nolan’s memory may be made to: I Got You, Inc. (The Ryan Hendricks Scholarship), 121 South Sandwich Road, Mashpee, MA 02649 or online viaVenmoOR to Laurentide at Mashpee Commons c/o Compassionate Caregivers Fund,64 Great Neck Road South, Mashpee, MA 02649.
